Creativity Magazine wrote a great article about House Industries and interviewed Andy and Rich to get the inside scoop. Read about how the Letters and Ligatures show came about and their thoughts on how typography can be perceived outside of the design community.
CREATIVITY INTERVIEW W/ HOUSE INDUSTRIES
HOUSE INDUSTRIES
SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce Letters and Ligatures, the exhibition that delves into the alphabetical world of the Delaware-based House Industries. The irreverently type foundry proudly showcases a collection of prints, patterns, installations, and sculpture based on their recent typographical explorations.
For Letters and Ligatures, House Industries conveys a single, yet complex philosophy: visual nomenclature fuels language, facilitates communication, and forms the basis of a civilized society. The written language strings together letters, words, and sentences, conveying the innermost thoughts a nd ideas that human beings communicate to the outside world. It is tied to our primitive nature, governing our individual choices and observations, our collective socio-anthropologic history. At House Industries, the dedicated collective of artists figure if these symbols of syntax hold such an authority, "they might as well look good."
Drawing upon House Industries' fifteen-year excursion into the world of scripts and symbols, the works in Letters and Ligatures detail the imaginative fonts and designs that marry the type with the thought. "Without standardized lexigraphy, we could not create the essence of truth, allowing history to pass on the tongues of those who change it to suit their needs." House Industries understands that each design requires a commitment of time, energy, and creativity. With each project, the bond between artist and font is deepened. The two work closely together, first coming to an understanding of the project's origins and meaning, then translating that abstraction into something that compliments but does not distract from the main idea. In essence, House Industries' Letters and Ligatures aims to invite us to share in that close bond and is proof of House's instrumental role as innovators and directors in the multifaceted communications of our society.

"What defines a community?".
SNO, Subliminal Projects and Obey FIne Art moved to the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles in early 2008. As transplants we continue to adapt to our new environment, discovering and creating shared points of interest while forming new relationships with local vendors and residents. Fueled by curiosity we are eager to explore, digest and ultimately initiate a dialogue with our new friends and neighbors.
The first installment of Park Life will be a group exhibition, celebrating a diverse network of creative minds whom we like to call family- friends, relatives and fellow creators whom we have met along the way.
We will be releasing a limited amount of the War By Numbers Offset this Saturday 9/20, inside Subliminal Projects Gallery. Prints are going to be $50 and can be purchased by CREDIT CARD only. Prints will be sold in person only, one per person, no phone orders or reservations. Please see our ABOUT section for gallery hours. Beware Ebayers! We have policies regarding the prints so anyone who intends on ebaying their print, thanks but no thanks, you are not welcomed!

OPENING RECEPTION: August 23rd, 8pm - 11pm
SUBLIMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce Somehow, We All Seem Connected, a solo show of new works by Steven Harrington and Justin Krietemeyer, the creative duo behind National Forest Design. The exhibition will feature handmade multiples and sculptures exploring human connectivity and humorous points of similarity, through our perception of reality, experience, and imagination. The exhibit marks Steven and Justin’s fourth collaborative art exhibition and will run from August 23 to September 19, with an opening reception held for the artists on Saturday, August 23 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
For Somehow, We All Seem Connected, Harrington and Krietemeyer’s insightful, colorful pieces reinforce the presence of connectivity in the world that surrounds us, from an individual point of view, to complex peripheral networks, to foreign and fabricated cultures existing in another time and space. For their screen prints, the duo incorporates old black and white photographs that revive lost stories, only, now, Harrington and Krietemeyer infuse the pictures with
their exploration and experimentation of new media, graphic designs, and illustrations. The combination of old and new compliments the show’s focus on “the need to be loved, the desire to find your place in mayhem, and how much you rely on people.” The various pieces and geometric shapes in the screen prints are unique as individual pieces, but when melded together, a new cohesive idea is formed that calms and sooths the human spirit.
Harrington and Krietemeyer do no limit themselves to screen prints; instead, they have created vibrant 3-Dimensional teepees. The traditional form and primitive inspired drawings coupled with neon colors and psychedelic layouts transport the observer to an alternate universe suspended in space. For each piece, there is a strong anthropologic inspiration, with abstract cues, an “encyclopedic folk art”, that we are invited to observe, decode, and connect. The concept maintains a “youthful and naïve” observation of how people, places, and things relate, while simultaneously conveying the complexities of a philosophy altogether abstract.
Subliminal Projects and Studio Number One are very pleased to announce the first event in our Simple Pleasures series of cultural investigations into the things we love, admire, obsess, and collect.
Simple Pleasures 01 will showcase independent publishing and experimentation in zine making from Los Angeles and beyond. We'll be taking over the studio parking lot, filling it with music, and setting up tents and tables for over 20 different exhibitors to sell their merchandise. The exhibition will be followed by a panel discussion inside Subliminal Projects exploring topics such as the role of accessible art, modern book design, and means of content distribution.
