One of our favorite artists (he had amazing work in the Park Life show) was kind enough to send over some amazing screenprints for the Subliminal Projects store! Check them out, they just might come with a rad sticker too!
Check out this nice little video of Glen Friedman giving some insight into what it was like to be there at the beginning. A damn good photographer at the ripe age of 14.

PS - If you happened to miss BoingBoing's 4-part miniseries on him you can also watch that here.
You can now purchase John Van Hamersveld's show print, "99 St. Marks Place" in our online store! It is 18" x 24" and out of an edition of 150. The image for this print originated from a series of seven mouse drawings he made in New York during the winter of 1969.
Read his first-hand account:
Back at the girlfriends in New York 1969, up inside the small multi-room complex for days in the winter we held each other in the small bed in the room. In the mornings I sat in the empty room. The small space was 10' by 10', like a cube, but with a mattress on the floor so her hippie types could drop by to crash. For days and days, I spent mornings sitting on the floor with a pen and pad, and drew my famous Seven Mouse Drawings. High in the ceiling was a single light bulb overhead that lit my drawing paper, but also warmed the room throughout the day. It was winter outside and very cold.
I found myself constructing my seven drawings in my mind as a process: defining the lines a little at a time, no sketches, just one piece of paper at a time, drawing on them with a pen, over a couple of months, just drawing a little each day. I would leave at one o'clock to go up town and go through another experience, and returned to the drawing with ideas in my mind. As I designed my new vernacular, I thought of the drawing as kinetic and called them The City Rat Drawings Inside Walls of Chaos. One day, I thought I had finally finished them, my most amazing drawings to that date. I packed up my equipment with my portfolio and the set of seven drawings, and got up off the floor and left to take another cab to the Kennedy Airport to go see Rick Griffin in San Francisco.
Here's a fun clip of John drawing the Duke. It's almost like a giant puzzle! I can smell the sharpie fumes from here...

A RETROSPECTIVE
BY JOHN VAN HAMERSVELD
OPENING RECEPTION:
FRIDAY, MARCH 6TH/8-11PM
Like an acid trip in ink on the paper of space and time, John Van Hamersveld's graphics have transcended the psychedelic '60s and become classic images that are as futuristic as they are vintage. "Post-future," opening March 7 at Subliminal Projects, features many of Van Hamersvled's classic works juxtaposed with re-imaginings of those images, recent retro-styled pieces and a never-before-seen series of drawings connecting past and present. Through the show, Van Hamersvled creates a lens through which the past can be seen and the future can be sourced, where imagery melts into a pool that is both the source and the destination of creativity.
Best known for his legendary poster for the 1964 blockbuster surf film The Endless Summer and his album covers for the Beatles (Magical Mystery Tour), The Rolling Stones (Exile on Main Street), Jefferson Airplane (Crown of Creation), the Grateful Dead (Skeletons in the Closet), Kiss (Hotter Than Hell), and Blondie (Eat to the Beat), among others, as well as the mind-bending concert posters he created while operating the Pinnacle concert production company, Van Hamersvled has built up a wide-ranging body of work over a career verging on its sixth decade. He has been at various times artist, illustrator, and designer. Among his other creations: an official poster and 360-foot-long mural for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games; illustrations for Esquire, Rolling Stone, Billboard; and branding and logos for Fatburger, Contempo Casuals, and Broadway Deli. The iconography of his oeuvre runs deep, from Day-Glo tones to trippy swirls to the grinning "Johnny face," an icon in itself.
Van Hamersveld's retro-contempo-future-spective book, also titled Post-Future (Santa Monica Press), is scheduled for release in September.
