PARK LIFE: The New Utopia

Curated by Studio Number One

Opening Reception: Saturday, June 27th / 8-11PM

Exhibition Dates: June 27th - July 25th, 2009

For thousands of years, people have envisioned utopias.  And for as long as our world remains imperfect, we will continue to design our ideas for a perfect world.  But why do we create utopias?  What can we learn from past utopias?  How does our current existence inform our ideas of utopia?  How can defining a utopia help us evolve, empower and unify ourselves?  Can a better fantasy help us create a better reality?

Today, we see evolutions in technology and human interaction on a daily basis, leading us down an inevitable path of change and progress.  The New Utopia is the imagined endgame of this progress, a place that may not be perfect, but is always moving in that direction.

The New Utopia, opening June 27 at the Subliminal Projects gallery, offers multiple representations of utopias from a diverse group of creatives: artists, designers, writers, musicians, publishers, and other visionaries who are currently reshaping our culture.  Curated by Studio Number One, the exhibition is the second installment of their annual Park Life series, bringing diverse talent together for a moment in space and time.

Participating artists include: Shepard Fairey, Amanda Fairey, Florencio Zavala, Cleon Peterson, Zach Gibson, Kristian Henson, Casey Ryder, Jesselisa Moretti, Simon Steinhardt, Philip Lumbang, Ernesto Yerena, Marissa Textor, Adrianne Reade, Date Farmers, Jeremy Kaplan, Fighting, POW WOW, Seth Ferris, Sage Vaughn, Maya Hayuk, Michael Muller, Jessica Williams, Hellovon, Eric Elms, Mansi Shah, Tanya Rubbak, Gail Swanlund, Edwin Bethea, Jeremy Landman, Devin Gallagher, Nicholas Bowers, Spencer Elden, Z James

F%#K CANCER, WE HEART JUSTIN!!!

The great people at Poketo, along with Will Hays, Chris Bettig, and Zach Gibson have organized a fund raiser/emotional booster for one of our favorite people, Justin Van Hoy, who has been suffering and battling with Leukemia for quite some time now.  He has just been released from being in the hospital for three months undergoing chemo for the 2nd time, radiation and a bone marrow transplant.  Justin, and his amazing wife, Holly, are struggling physically, mentally, and financially.  We are organizing events for them to show our love and support all over the US, and we are organizing an evening here in Los Angeles on Friday June 5th at the Poketo Studio in downtown.  We are going to have a silent art auction, featuring artworks generously donate by:

EGO, ADDICTION, & OTHER BEDTIME STORIES

BY SAM FLORES

OPENING RECEPTION:

SATURDAY, MAY 2ND / 8-11PM

In his show, "Ego, Addiction, and Other Bedtime Stories," Sam Flores tackles what is perhaps one of the most pervasive themes in human existence: the struggle between light and dark.  Through color and contrast, Flores addresses those parts of our selves that seek to hide behind the protective mask of acceptance while our inner demons claw at us from the inside.  "There is a constant war being waged in the fight for balance," says Flores, "to determine which side of us, good or bad, will win out in any given moment."  Yet despite the eternal conflict, Flores never hesitates to remind us of the potential for beauty to shine through - even in our darkest hours.
